Getting Older: The Good and Bad

I turned 32 in April, and even before then there were a lot of signs of me getting older. These were a mix of my tastes becoming different, my patience level, what I expect from people, and of course what aging does to my skin. Getting older of course has it’s pros and cons. There are ups and downs like anything else.

Getting-Older-The-Good-and-Bad-o

The Good

  • You REALLY learn what you like and dislike and you ARE NOT afraid to ask for it. For example, I know how I want a steak cooked. I know how I take my coffee. I also know when someone is NOT doing their job. I have no problem speaking up.
  • You learn who your friends are. I have an entire post going into detail upon the things I have learned about friendship since my mid-twenties, but by 32 I know who true friends are. These are the friends that support you, understand, and don’t ALWAYS put their needs first. They are the friends that bring you tacos when you need tacos, and send you funny GIFs when there is nothing else to say. They send sweet cards and notes because they know you really need to laugh.
  • You know that staying home on a Saturday night is cool because hangovers are the actual worst.
  • Very few things are better than clean sheets, Netflix, and an early night with your husband.
  • Your family is the most important. You tried to avoid those get-togethers when you were younger and now you live for them.

The Bad

  • Speaking of those two glasses of wine, when did those start to hurt so much the next day?
  • Sunday scaries have a new meaning.
  • Your skin plays tricks on you. Oh these lines by my eyes? These wrinkles? Where did you come from? I did not ask for that for my birthday! This is why RoC’s Daily Resurfacing Disks have become a major part of my life. They are clinically proven to help diminish the look of fine lines and wrinkles in just one week! Thank you lord! They also solve three problems: one side gently exfoliate, the other side gently cleanse & remove make up. Plus they are gentle enough for use every single day. Yes please!

  • You CONSTANTLY get the question about what’s next: When are you going to get married, buy a house, have a baby, have a second baby, have a third baby, buy another house. It never ends.
  • You host A LOT of events: birthdays, baby showers, bridal showers, family functions. It’s fun until it’s not.
  • You pay way too much attention to what you eat and how much you sleep. I guess this is both a good and bad thing depending on how you look at it.
  • You feel guilty about having lazy weekend days.

Of course most of these things are tongue-in-cheek and super silly, but isn’t getting older just that? HA!

I would love to know what good and bad parts about getting older you guys would add to this list!

When you hit the mid 50’s eating right, excretes and taking care of your skin and over all health become even more important. The aches and pains start to take effect. If there is something you want to do or see don’t wait. If you wait your husband or friend might not have the physical ability to go. Don’t put anything off.

  3. I know the questions about what’s up next are coming more and more frequently. My husband and I just celebrated our third anniversary and we’re getting a lot more discussions about babies–or people flat out ask.

True, true! As I age I get busier and busier. And don’t forget you put yourself on a curfew. LOL who would have thought I would want to go to be at 10.

  5. Totally agree about the hangovers! Looking back, I have no idea how I was so energetic and hangover-less in college!

  6. I’m only on the 25 end of getting older, but I can totally relate to a lot of this! There is NOTHING I despise more than questions about when I’m getting married (though now I’m engaged so I’m asking for it) and when we’re going to have babies! Uh, even if I knew, I would tell you, random distant family with no boundaries.

  9. I’ve always said it and the older I get the more true it is “age is nothing but a number.” I love my 30’s. I started dating my (now) hubby, got engaged, got married, adopted a puppy and now we’re building a house together. There are so many wonderful things about getting older and I love every second of it. I definitely realize the importance of taking care of my skin, too!

  10. The one thing I hate about aging is that my feet can’t stand heels anymore. I used to be able to wear them all night without any consequences.

I’m turning 26 in two weeks and I still find myself telling people I’m 22 when they ask how old I am… I actually forget all the time that I’m getting closer to thirty than twenty! I love the confidence that I’ve developed as I’ve gotten older and I don’t think I would trade that for anything even though I’m already starting to get grey hair!

This is hysterical, but so true! I am turning 31 in a month and completely echo every single statement. I also would add that you know how to dress better. I know exactly what silhouettes are flattering on me and don’t buy into the trends unless it’s something I know would look good on me. When I shop now, I scan the stores for the cuts, materials and styles I know would look decent in the dressing room, rather than just what the mannequin says is ‘cool.’ LOL.

  13. I’m nearing the end of my 30’s and just yesterday I was talking with a girlfriend almost 10 years younger. One of the best things about aging is that you really don’t spend as much time/energy on stuff that drains you!

  15. I feel this so much and I am only 26! The biggest thing I’ve noticed about my 20s so far is that I’ve just stopped doing things that don’t give me joy. I no longer have time for people who bring me down.

  19. I always wanted my boys to be older so they could tell me what was wrong rather than just crying, or so that it would be easier to travel and do more things. Now that they are 4 and 9 I miss the times they were so small and would still let me hold them and rock them to sleep. It’s a blessing that we don’t have to wonder what’s wrong anymore, but it’s hard not to miss those precious moments!

  21. 32 is not old at all. I am 28 and I still feel like I am kid 😛 I agree with all these pros and cons, especially with the wrinkles. The older you get, the more wiser you become. 🙂

My husband will be turning 32 next month! He’s older than me, and I think it’s him that makes me feel getting older won’t be so bad–he’s still doing front flips and cartwheels and pulling crazy pranks, so I figure the 30s can be pretty youthful, indeed. 🙂

  26. I have never been happier than I am now in my thirties. Why did it take so long for me to embrace, accept and fully appreciate who I am? I think wisdom comes with age. And wrinkles, yes, they do too 🙁 We can’t have it all at once, can we?

Getting older means more responsibilities, but it also has its perks even if sometimes it can be challenging. I love how you pointed all the good things out when it comes to aging. I think we all have one enemy, and that’s how our skin changes as we grow older., but hey, we have all the beauty products in the world we just have to find the perfect one!

  28. I believe people take me more seriously as I get older. That’s a positive. Negative would be my metabolism slowing down. Bleh.

  30. Great summary! I’m 28 and can definitely tell the difference from my early 20’s. The biggest thing to me is that I can’t stay up late anymore! I used to just naturally stay up until 1 and sleep til 9 and now my body is ready for sleep by 11, haha.
