Post Holiday Recovery Plan

So the holidays have come an gone and lets face it, we all indulged. We said we would watch what we ate. We said moderation is key. Then we went to those parties and family functions and ate all the things, drank all the drinks, and stayed up way too late. So now what? It’s time for my post holiday recovery plan!

Post Holiday Recovery Plan

Get back on schedule: The first thing I do after the holidays is try to get back to my normal schedule ASAP. Working for myself I still try to keep a pretty strict schedule because the more it feels like an 8-5 job the better I function. I get up when Andrew gets up, and I try to finish my work before dinner (when I can). This also means getting back to regular morning workouts, doing laundry on laundry days, and meal planning. The quicker you get back to normal life the better you will feel.

Put yourself first: This is such a controversial topic I feel. Being selfish is NOT a bad thing. If you aren’t healthy and happy how can you be good to anyone else? So put yourself first. Say no when you need to, take yourself to that afternoon movie when you need a break. Make sure you are giving yourself time daily to reflect and be healthy. Maybe for you this is a 30 minute walk, an hour long yoga or barre class, or just a cardio session at the gym. Just give yourself the time you need.

Get rid of the crap: By this I mean the food and alcohol! We had to throw out a ton of leftovers and sweets just because the lack of self control in this house is insane. Get rid of the crap! Stock the fridge with healthy fruits and veggies. Get rid of the sodas, sweets, and empty calorie foods. This is a great time to take a break from alcoholic drinks as well!

Health is key: This is the time of year I always get sick. Looking on my Timehop apparently I get the flu every other January. WHYYYY? I did get a flu shot this year and hopefully I am safe, but I just don’t have time to get sick. Also, my allergies have been a hot mess. I have been carrying Ricola Dual Action Cough Drops everywhere with me lately! They are a multi-symptom cough drop that provides relief for coughs and sore throats, all in one drop. They are such a blessing when you wake up and your throat is feeling less than great. Dual Action Cough Drops combine a unique blend of ten natural Swiss alpine herbs, natural menthol, and soothing syrup center for fast, safe relief you can trust. These are probably my favorite Ricola product! They come in two YUMMY flavors: Swiss Cherry and Honey Lemon. I keep them in my car, my makeup bag, and by my bed!

I hope you all had an amazing holiday season and that you are on track to get back to day to day life!

What is your post holiday recovery plan?

These are great ideas! I quit my full time job to peruse freelance writing full time and it’s been slightly rocky. As far as getting back to normal all of the alcohol & chocolates are gone. I hope you guys had a great holiday.

  6. Oh man I needed this post. I allowed myself way too much time in ‘holiday mode’. I’m on leave from work, which has contributed to my slacking but I really need to get back to my routine and re-focus on my healthy eating and exercise (whoops) before I head back to the office to lessen the shock aha. Thanks for sharing, girl!

my post holiday recovery is very similar. It starts with making sure my fridge is STOCKED with healthy foods (and pre made meals so I can just reheat if I’m busy) and making sure to get back into a schedule.

It also involves a lot more saying NO to people so I can relax. I just saw everyone I love most in December and can take a brief hiatus from being a social butterfly.

I also took a social media break/blogging break for the first week of January, which was a really nice reset (though back at it now!)

  8. That’s definitely what I need. Luckily, my husband and I got back to our place in TN with empty cabinets and an empty fridge. So the only things we bought were healthy items!

Love the idea of throwing away all the crap!!! I have so many sweets and candies around my apartment that tempt me everyday when I get home from work. Definitely going to go home tonight and raid my fridge and throw out anything overly nasty…not my chocolate though 😉

Being diabetic kind of ensures that I watch what I eat and drink no matter the season! Not to say I don’t go off once in a while! You just have to pull up your big girl panties and start again!

Great tips! Self-care is such a controversial issue, but it is a necessity. It is so easy to run ourselves into the ground which makes us more susceptible to getting sick. Ricola drops are awesome!

  28. The holidays ALWAYS mess me up a bit, because I always feel “off track” then and get anxious that I’m falling behind…it can be hard to just take time for myself still and be focused and calm!

I’m with you on trying to clear the junk food out of our house. Every Christmas my mother-in-law sends us home with a literal gift bag full of junk food and then more sweets leftover from the Christmas celebration and while I feel terrible tossing it…I just can’t have it around the house or we’ll eat it all! This year I compromised and brought it to the teacher’s lounge at the school where I teach, and luckily for me…it was gone the next day 🙂

Maybe because we chose to have a low key end to the year in my household, I don’t have a “recovery” of any sort. What I have done this year is join another gym with a specific program and challenges that I like.
