How to pack when moving home

While companies like Gentoo can help you find and buy new homes, you’re largely on your own when it comes to packing! This can make moving super stressful. Luckily, I have some top tips that will help you turn up at your new home with everything you need and without any breakages.

Order, order!

The order that you pack your possessions is extremely important: you don’t want to pack away your makeup on day one and have to go without eyeliner for a week! Start out with those items that you use least and can go without for a while, like books, ornaments and last season’s wardrobe.

Label everything

This might seem really obvious, but try to pack everything in groups and give the box a big, clear label. Write what room the box is destined for in huge letters to help movers, and list what types of items are inside so you can find what you’re looking for more quickly when unpacking. this box from Viking, which is super-bright, easy to carry and spacious.

Pack with care

Carefully wrap all fragile items in bubble wrap and tape, and use strong cardboard boxes, reinforced with packing tape. Make sure there’s no void space in the boxes, as this increases the risk of items rattling around and breaking. Try Staples for all the equipment you need.

When it comes to small, expensive items like necklaces, place them into a padded envelope and then straight into a separate box. For added peace of mind, transport your most precious possessions to the new home yourself, and take them from the car to somewhere safe ASAP.
