A serious post…be warned

Over the weekend my mom and I went to a movie together. We saw Dallas Buyers Club. Have you heard of it? Probably not.

Aside from the most amazing performances by both Mathew McConaughey and Jared Leto the movie literally brought me to tears just thinking about the state of our world a mere 28 years ago. I was one year old. The AIDS epidemic was new. People assumed if you had HIV or AIDS you were gay. How sad. How sad in our world if you had AIDS you were assumed to be a “homo” a “queer” those derogatory words just boil my blood. Why? Because I am not ignorant. Because I know people close to me that have that virus. Because I see their day to day struggle. Because I knew people at a young age who had that virus from things other than IV drug use or unprotected sex.

Whats even sadder is our world hasn’t changed all that much. People still think these things. People are still ignorant to the facts. Thankfully 28 years later people can live long full healthy lives with the right medications without having to go to other countries to get them and without having to suffer. There still is no cure. That is upsetting.

I highly suggest you watch the Dallas Buyers Club. If it is playing near where you live. Go to the theater sit down with an open mind and open heart because this movie is based on real events that happened and of course takes place in my city so theres that. But still know that what these people went through is real. Know that the hurtful names they were and are still called is not OK. Being ignorant is not OK. Make yourself intelligent NOT ignorant.

Steps off soapbox.

  3. I really want to see that movie– like, so bad. It’s so hard for us to go to the theater because my fiance just can’t simply sit still and I get upset if people are being rude. Maybe we could go on an off night or early morning. Anyway, I totally agree with what you are saying about AIDS/HIV and the whole gay or lesbian bit. My fiance came from a completely different “world” than I was raised in– he was raised in Alaska by his very stern father and all kinds of other things so he HAD very different views. It took him a few times of saying ignorant things around me before I had to sit him down and explain some stuff to him and let him meet with a friend of my that is living with HIV. It’s upsetting that people are so ignorant but also inspiring that people can learn and grown when they just don’t know any better!

I’m not sure what you’re trying to say here, but I don’t see what the big deal is if someone thinks you’re gay. I don’t find anything wrong with being gay.
I feel like if I were HIV positive, for whatever reason, I would have bigger problems. Why would I care what people thought about HOW I got it? That would not concern me.
I wouldn’t be insulted if someone thought I was gay. I don’t find gay to he a negative thing in life.
The gay people I know are mostly delightful people.

  9. I went to see this movie on opening day! I thought it was amazing! It’s definitely an eye-opening movie – especially for us who were only 1-2 years old at the time the movie took place. Although we have much work to do, I’m glad the world is a more tolerant place than it was in the 80s – for both the gay community and those living with HIV/AIDS.

It’s on my list of movies to see! It amazes me that so many people are still super uninformed when it comes to HIV/AIDS.

  12. Ignorance isn’t bliss. But that also falls into more categories than just this one. It’s important to have conversations. It’s important to be informed. And it’s important to understand that people will have their own opinions. With that being said, I wish more people would get informed so that if they do have differing opinions at least they are educated to stand up and fight for why they believe the way they do instead of either jumping on the bandwagon to share an opinion or just claiming an opinion because of ignorance.

  13. Ekk! This movie has been on my watch list for a while now. I too was intrigued because it’s about our city. I din’t know it was based off real events and now that makes me want to watch it even more.

I saw this on New Year’s Eve. A local theater plays unknown/indie films and it finally was there. A heartbreaking story and amazing performances by the actors. Thanks for recommending it. I probably wouldn’t have seen it otherwise.
