Beat the Winter Blues

download (1)

It’s getting to be that time where the temps drop and the winter blues set in. You know what I’m talking about right? You don’t want to go outside because it’s cold but you start to get cabin fever from staying inside. Then it’s cloudy and rainy and snowy(depending on where you live) and it puts you in a little bit of a funk that only the largest bag of snickers can help. Fear not I am here to share my favorite ways to beat the winter blues with you!

Beat the Winter Blues:

1.  Find a great workout to do: Be it at a nearby studio or gym or one of the millions you can find for free on youtube. Working out always boosts my energy and makes my attitude so much better. During the winter months it’s so easy to forget to work out and avoid it and hide behind bulky sweaters but it’s as good a time as any to up your workout game.

2. Meet a friend for coffee: You can throw on some cute boots and a sweater and meet a friend you haven’t seen in a while to catch up over a warm drink. Always puts me in a good mood plus coffee is fantastic.

3. Get into a new show: This may go against the whole not staying inside thing but if you are going to stay inside take up a show on Netflix or Hulu Plus. My personal favorites are Scandal, House of Cards, The Mentalist, and The Following. All shows that suck you in from the beginning.

4. Head to your library: If you are on a budget don’t let that stop you from catching up on some good books. I know the public library in my city lets you check out books on devices so I can check out books and read them on my iPad. I am a huge fan of this! Or if you like reading the actual books themselves then find a local library(hello free) and check out all those books that everyones been talking about.

5. Volunteer: The Winter is a great time to volunteer for a charity you are passionate about. This winter I am volunteering at a couple local races with the LLS. It’s very near and dear to me as my dad is a survivor of Lymphoma. Find a cause and help out. Nothing will make you happier!

Love this post!!! The Winter Blues or Blue Funk as I call it – are super real! I love meeting with old / new friends. I also like trying new places to eat or getting Bubble Tea! My new fave!! When I’m really down, I take a lavender bath, light my favorite holiday candle scent, and drink some coffee – and of course turn on the best movie ever – The Holiday!!!!

    Can’t wait for Saturday!!!

I can totally see how people who live somewhere really cold may get the winter blues. Just being snowed in for 3 days up in Masssachusetts was depresssing! But we are so lucky down here in Houston to be so warm. 🙂

  11. Great ideas!! I also love having nights in (especially getting snowed in) with friends and doing things like drinking hot coco (or more accurately usually wine) and playing board games. I also do a lot of DDR on my Wii when I am stuck inside due to the bad weather!

I love this post! Its great advice on how to beat the winter blues. I love the library and use it all the time. In the month of December you can find any new or best seller because few people are checking out books. I found 4 yesterday so am settling in for a reading marathon. That is how I beat the blues. I escape. After I exercise of course .

I beat the winter blues by getting out of the house! I might just go to Target and browse the aisles or just run to Starbucks but as long as I’m showering, getting ready for the day and getting out of the house, I feel like a million bucks.

But even if you take a walk around the block it helps! That brisk walk and cool air against the cheeks is a wake up call and you will enjoy it after you freeze your butt off!
I like the go meet your friend for coffee or in my case hot chocolate!
Some people have to get those lights to help them shine a bit more! (per say)
    Get dressed and see people!

  33. These are great suggestions! I am sometimes struck with the winter blahs since we live out in the country and only my husband drives – I cant really go anywhere with the kids! But we make our own fun and, yeah, Netflix helps 🙂

Netflix is not a bad idea at all. I always like to start a new series at least once a month and stretch it out as long as possible. I have a tendency to binge on series. Volunteering always help as well. Keep you busy and active.

  35. Neely, I know exactly what you mean about cabin fever. I moved from Australia to Canada (my husband is Canadian), and I think the weather made me a bit crazy. SO much so that I went walking and running for hours in -35 in Toronto every day! I just couldn’t bear being inside so much!
