The Best Advice I’ve Ever Gotten

As I get older I find myself remembering a lot of advice that people have given me in my life or advice that I have heard. Some of these pieces of advice are from my mom, other family members, mentors, celebrities, or even from friends. I think these things come into play in certain situations and I wanted to share with you guys the best advice I’ve ever gotten. There are a few of them because I could not just pick one!

The-Best-Advice-Ive-Ever-Gotten-o

One of my favorite sayings is “you can use all the mayonnaise you want, but you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken s***” Guys this could not be more true. I find this specifically with friends in this stage of life, but at a time before I was married it worked with guys too. Basically, you can’t change people. You can’t will people to be something they are not. People are either going to be what you need from them or not. If they aren’t then you don’t need them in your life. Thanks for that Ty! I think I still have the text you sent me saying that saved!

Little said is easily mended. While I was raised by my amazing mom and dad, I was also raised by an amazing woman name Louise (Weezie). She was with our family from the time my mom was born until I was 17. She was in our lives till I was 21. Not a day goes by that I do not think of her or miss her. One of the best things she ever taught me was that little said is easily mended. Meaning gossiping or talking too much will always come back to bite you! The little you say the easier it is to mend. Meaning bad things! Talk all you want about good stuff haha!

My friend, Danielle, who is an amazing blogger and who has been such an amazing mentor to me over the past few years has spoken at several conferences I have attended. At one conference she said “if it isn’t a hell yeah it’s a no.” I plan to do an entire post coming up about saying NO and when and why it’s important, but for now just remember like Danielle says with anything in life “if it isn’t a hell yeah it’s a no!”

My mom is one of the smartest people I know. She has given me a ton of advice in life, but in regards to fitness she always tells me when I say how I don’t want to go to the gym or I’m tired or any of the hundreds of excuses I come up with. She reminds me that I will never regret a workout. I can promise you to this day I have never regretted a workout. I have however regretted Doritos, queso, and an entire bag of SweeTarts!

My first semester of college I got really sick with a cold/flu that I could not shake. It was close to the time of exams and I needed to go to office hours. My professor asked me why I was so sick and I rattled off things going on. I will never forget what she said to me next, “you can’t have fun or have a career if you’re dead.” It was extreme, but she was basically saying it’s OK to say no to fun plans and it’s OK to take a break from studying if you need to. I was killing myself trying to study, make good grades, and keep involved with my sorority and other activities. I was probably sleeping four hours a night, which is why I could not get well. Now when I’m sick or I just need to rest, I do. I remember what she said and I try to never push myself so hard that I’m making myself sick.

One thing I always had on hand in college and 10 years later are Ricola original drops. They have always been my lifeline for allergies, sore throats, colds, and just days where I wake up feeling bleh. The Swiss original herb cough drop has been around since the early 1940’s and has such a strong history. Today, Ricola products are available in over 50 countries. That’s a lot of people feeling better everyday thanks to Ricola.

I have gotten other amazing pieces of advice but these are the best advice I’ve ever gotten and I am so grateful for the lessons and the people who taught them to me.

What is the best advice you’ve ever gotten?

I’m sharing #Ricola in my life as part of a Ricola sponsored series for Socialstars™

  3. The best advice I received was from my parents. They always said, “Don’t ask people to respect you. You have to earn it. Show them you deserve it.”

  4. These are all really good (and I’ve never heard any of them before), but my favorite is “Little said is easily mended.” It’s so true, gossip and treating people how you wouldn’t want to be treated always bites ya.

Yep. That’s definitely great advice and one that I live by. We only have so many hours in a day, so many days in our lives and learning how to spend our time in things that are really important is key 🙂

I honestly can’t think of what the best advice given to me was! Maybe ‘leave well enough alone,’ which is just another way of saying ‘if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.’ But I’m loving these little bits of advice, so thanks for these! 🙂

hahaha the first one is hilarious. I’ve never heard it but it is so very true.

All this advice is great, I’m really bad about taking time to settle and say no when I’m sick, but I’ve started doing it more in the last year… guess what! I don’t stay sick as long (go figure)

The best advice I’ve ever gotten? “If you’re fighting to keep a relationship going at 20, end it. This is supposed to be the fun part of life. If you’re already fighting and you haven’t even applied for a mortgage yet, it’s not meant to be. Life just gets so much harder”

My mom was totally right about that one.

    great post!

  16. Best advice I ever got was: the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing.

It means to not talk about the good deeds you do, to just do good things.

I love the advice that if it’s not hell yeah it’s a no. I seriously need to remember that one! As I’ve been working my way into a possible career change I’m realizing that I’ve been saying “hell yeah!” a lot more in this new direction. It’s really showing me that my meh feelings about my current job mean that it’s probably a no for me long term.

  20. Hahah love the chicken salad quote. I grew up in the south so I have all kinds of gems like that in my mind. The best advice off the top of the head, “You can’t make everybody happy.” As someone who wants to do a good job and be liked it’s hard for me not to have people’s approval sometimes but blogging taught me that I need to get over that.

I love these pieces of advice! When I was in college I was an RA and we had a list called the “Heck Yes List” (we were at a Bible college so we couldn’t say hell) 😉 It consisted of the guys that were quality and, if they asked us out, we were required to say “Heck yes!” to at least one date. Your friend’s “If it isn’t a hell yes then it’s a no” reminded me of that!

  31. I LOVE the piece of advice that you mentioned – little said is easily mended. What a great reminder! I used to always roll my eyes at my parents when they said that you will become who you surround yourself by, but as I’m getting older, I’m finding this to be SO TRUE!

  32. Good post! As a former people pleaser, I like the sound of your friend’s phrase, “If it’s not a hell yeah, it’s a no.” I think it’ about as good as something I heard the other day: don’t let someone else’s bad day become yours. It tough, but I’m learning to shake off the negativity that’s so pervasive in society, and to pay attention to my own personal health and well being. We can’t do anything good when we’re depleted and discouraged. Thanks for sharing your life lessons!

My grandma always said “Be kind. Everyone is busy being an asshole so this is your chance to show someone some kindness.” She said this all the time and I was far too young to hear or say asshole but she didn’t care. Her point got across and I can honestly say I am much more of a kind person than an asshole.

For me I have to say the best new advice I’ve gotten was to ‘eat the frog’, meaning to do the one thing you’ve been trying to avoid; what you’ve procrastinated doing; you know you have to do it, so just do it first before you allow other things to distract you. Eating the frog first on the daily to-do list gives me the energy and motivagion to get everything else done because it’s all frosting from here.
