Essentials For A Sick Baby

This time of year I think everyone is sick all the time. I probably use hand sanitizer 30 times a day, and even then babies are so susceptible to getting sick. With Liam being 9 months old and me really wanting to keep him well, we do everything we can. But a few weeks ago he was sick. He had an upper respiratory infection and was so congested. He felt miserable, and seeing him miserable made us feel so sad. So today I am sharing a few essentials for a sick baby so you are prepared if your little ones get sick.

Essentials For A Sick Baby

Medicine: So I may have lucked out because my kid takes medicine like a champ. However, when he had the stomach bug and a fever that was an entire different story. He couldn’t keep anything down! FeverAll® Acetaminophen Suppositories ended up becoming our best friend and we continue to use it to this day. It is the only acetaminophen brand with dosing instructions for children as young as six months of age. FeverAll is ideal to have on hand in situations or with conditions that make oral liquid acetaminophen difficult to administer, such as if your child is vomiting, tight-lipped, will spit out, or has other health issues. It contains fewer inactive ingredients than other infants’ fever reducers*. That means no parabens, no high fructose corn syrup, no artificial flavors, and no preservatives.

*Versus Infant’s Tylenol and Infants’ Motrin Oral Suspension

Thermometer: I really thought those forehead thermometers would be what we used, but they are insanely inaccurate with babies. So as much as it may freak you out, you just have to do a rectal thermometer. I promise it’s not as bad as you think. I highly suggest getting probe covers for easy clean up!

Comfy Clothes: When you are sick you want to be comfy, right? Babies are NO different. When Liam is sick it’s the ONLY time I let him hang out in jammies during the day. He’s comfy, cool, and calm. Sometimes I may even treat him to a new pair of jammies 🙂

Lovey: We are huge fans of Angel Dear lovies. Liam loves his lambie and bear bear. So when he isn’t feeling good the combo of a lovey and a paci is winning. He is just so content.

Mommy Cuddles: That’s what we have always called cuddling with me when Liam is sick, or tired. Sometimes babies just need mama cuddles! Don’t you want your mom when you’re sick? Even as an adult I still do haha! Some other essentials to have on hand are: Pedialite, extra thermometer probe covers, a humidifier, and extra sheets for the crib!

  2. I feel like such an old mom as I read this. Six children, ranging from 3 to 21. These days my ‘kiss thermometer’ is pretty accurate (you know when you kiss the back of their necks and their foreheads) – after 21 years of practice.

Fevers are ‘you’re fine’, ‘little warm there’, ‘you seem to have a fever’ and ‘this is serious – let’s get to the hospital’. Probably not recommended, and it drives the doctors crazy.

The last time one of my children had a fever? A year ago, my youngest had pneumonia. She went from ‘little warm there’ to ‘this is serious’ in a few hours, and was having trouble breathing.

Aceteminophen didn’t bring it down – in fact, the fever kept climbing once we reached the hospital, and she peaked at 106F in the waiting room (at which point we were rushed in to see a doctor!). Two spots of pneumonia on her lungs. For the next two weeks, aceteminophen, ibuprofen and antibiotics on a strict around-the-clock schedule kept her pain down and got rid of the infection.

This ‘old mom’ wouldn’t be without infant and child acetaminophen in the house!

  10. My boys are 6 and 10 but I still keep Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Benadryl, and a cough syrup on-hand all the time. You never know when something might come on in the middle of the night!
