A DIY Guide to A Beautiful Summer
The “official” start of summer has just passed, but you’ve likely been prepping for the warmer months for awhile. Mani-pedis, waxes, self-tanners, and more become part of our warm-weather beauty routine. However, our skin also needs some TLC during the summer months due to the opposing effects of humid weather and dry, air-conditioned air. Some of us get really oily skin during the summer from the heat, while others get dry and flaky from sun exposure or stale air. What to do when your skin starts rebelling? Follow a few of these easy tips and tricks!
First, make sure you find the right cleanser for your skin type. It’s really important that those with sensitive, dry skin don’t use a harsh acne-fighting face wash, while those with oily skin might not benefit from something mild. If you’re confused about what type of skin you have, try to go to a beauty counter or retailer like Sephora and describe your skin issues. The employees are well-trained and will know exactly what you might need.
Next, moisture is important to keep skin radiant and youthful. However, who wants to slather on moisturizer when they’re sweaty and oily? In that case, look for a gel-based moisturizer. It feels fresh, clean, and light with no greasy effects. Look for non-comedogenic gels; this means they won’t clog pores either. An amazing example would be Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing gel – a little pricey, but very effective. For a less expensive drugstore version, Aveeno makes a great, light moisturizer that won’t clog pores.
How about exfoliation? Some people shy away from it because it seems a little “hardcore” for their standard beauty routine, but exfoliating really helps slough away dead, dry skin. You can exfoliate with cleansers, masks, and scrubs, or you can really go for serious results with microdermabrasion. It might sound intense, but you can perform microdermabrasion at home with a variety of kits and masks that not only provide expert exfoliation, but can help reduce fine lines and acne scars as well as even out skin tone. However, be sure to start slow with microdermabrasion, because it can be irritating to sensitive skin. If you’re interested in trying it out, make sure to read product reviews at online retailers like ShopNBC to help you make an educated purchasing decision. Kits will typically come with an exfoliating wand, microdermabrasion cream, and an instructional DVD so you can teach yourself to do your own facials!
And of course, the number one beauty rule of summer: sunscreen! Don’t leave home without it. There’s nothing more important than healthy skin, and even if you enjoy a summer glow, be sure to apply something with a little SPF. I love this non-greasy Neutrogena one – it’s perfect for everyday wear. Looking like a sunburned lobster is never in style.
