When People Ask What I Do

So whenever I meet new people or for instance the first time I met A’s family and I respond with “I’m a blogger.” I get a lot of weird looks, side eyes, and a million questions. My favorite is “how do you make money from that?” another favorite “Isn’t that more of a hobby?”

At this point I laugh the silly responses off because while it did start as a hobby. It is a full time career. I am lucky. I am lucky that I can support myself with my blogging, my Social Media business and freelance writing.  I am lucky that I wake up everyday loving what I do. I am lucky that I can take care of things around our house like laundry, cleaning and errands because my schedule allows for that. I am lucky that I am able to get in a workout everyday that isn’t at 5AM or 7 PM like it was when I had an office job. I am lucky that I can throw on some yoga crops and a t-shirt and call that work attire. Last week I was lucky that I got to take an hour of one morning and go for a long walk with my neighbor/one of my best friends. Yes doing this meant I worked a little later that night. I also worked a little longer each day this week so that on Friday I could give myself a half day to go see Veronica Mars when it opened.

I am lucky that I LOVE what I do. I love it. I love writing. I love connecting and networking with other bloggers in the professional blogging field. I am beyond lucky that I am on a roster of women and men who are the best at what they do. I still pinch myself about that daily.

I am lucky that I am at a place where if A needs to travel for work we don’t have to spend the time apart. I just need to pack up my laptop and a few notebooks and I can go with him. That is so rare in a relationship. Usually if one part of a couple has to travel they have to spend that time apart. I love that we can go together.

When people ask what I do I love saying “I am a blogger.” What a blessing that is.

You are lucky to have such a flexible schedule! My biggest career goal would be to be an account executive at a marketing firm. I would love to manage huge accounts such Nike or Disney. Or I would even like to own my own marketing agency. I love the creative side of things, as well as writing so those two would be perfection for me.

Lucky you! I’m a teacher and wondering about lots of things right now. I love what I do, but less than when I started and I’m afraid to not enjoy it anymore in a few years – I’ve been teaching for only 4 years. Blogging is a hobby and I really love it. How did you make it into a full time job?
    Happy St Pattys!

It’s just amazing that you have built a career like that. It will definitely be even more awesome when you eventually decide to have kids! That’s exactly why I’m doing what I’m doing right now (starting my own business). I want control of my schedule and I want to be able to put my family first. Hopefully this will all fall into place sooner rather than later!

That’s AWESOME that you have that flexibility. My Hubs and I have the same kind of deal, and it is the best! I think that the hardest part for me – is that since we effectively both work for ourselves – out income is truly dependent on our input – so it can be hard to set it aside and take a break. I need to be better about this – and my hubs totally does too… but I don’t think I would change the flexibility. Just need to take some clues from you about balance. 😉

  8. I have recently found a love for blogging and I am working towards seeing how far it can take me. I’m blessed enough to not HAVE to work and get to stay home with my kids, but I am working on getting to a point where I can bring in some extra income. I love writing and I love all the things blogging has taught me so far! It is such an exciting career to be per suing and I can’t wait to see where it leads.

What a blessing to do what you love and to have the flexibility. I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up so before I can set any real goals, I’d better figure that out 😉

I love that I can work from home and be with my babies, BUT I did wish I made more of a steady income! I didn’t forget about your email about consulting… I’ve just been a crazy person! Soon, hopefully 🙂
