Prime: A Book Review + Giveaway

Prime-Book-Review

Recently I was given the opportunity to review the book, The Prime by Dr. Kulreet Chaudhary. With the new year and everyone wanting to jump into healthy eating, healthy living, workouts, and losing weight this was PERFECT timing! A little about the book:

ThePrimeCOVER

Integrative neurologist Dr. Kulreet Chaudhary discovered a beautiful side effect to the eating and lifestyle tools she gave her brain patients–shedding excess pounds. In this, her first book, she shows readers that weight gain is a result of the body being in a toxic, inflammatory state. If your body is not prepared or ‘primed’ for weight loss, you will fight an uphill biochemical battle, and the odds of succeeding are slim. So she’s reverse engineered our way of eating, so we can stop dieting backward and start succeeding instead.

Using a blend of cutting-edge science and ancient wisdom, Dr. Chaudhary has crafted a plan like no other. In it, she shares:

–          The importance of neuroadaptation, food addiction, and the brain (or, why it’s not your fault that dieting has been so hard in the past!)

–          Why it’s not what you eat, but what you digest

–          How to determine if you have a Leaky Brain—and what The Prime can do about it (hint: everything)

–          The 4 Stages of the Prime

  1. Activate a Biochemical Shift
  2. Crush Cravings (No Willpower Required)
  3. Ignite Energy and Fat
  4. Biohack Your Lifestyle Habits

… and how they’ll help you spontaneously shed pounds, by adding (not subtracting) simple teas and supplements and without giving up any foods you love.

About the Author: Dr. Kulreet Chaudhary is a neurologist, and the director of Wellspring Health at Scripps Memorial Hospital and a pioneer in the field of integrative medicine. She received her internship in internal medicine at UCLA and her neurology fellowship from UCSD. Her research includes groundbreaking work in stem cell therapies for diabetic peripheral neuropathy and drug development for the treatment of ALS. She is the co-founder of Habit Change, and she is committed to bringing national awareness to the need for a paradigm shift in medicine that focuses on patient empowerment and a health-based medical system.

Lastly, you’ll learn how to live fully Primed, the secrets of the Super-Primed, and, when you’re ready to explore new foods, how to eat according to your unique constitution.

Prime-Book-2

My favorite thing about the book was the Gut IQ. I found the Gut IQ to be extremely fascinating. You take this quiz and it tells you exactly how many weeks you need to be on each track. For reference when I took the quiz my score was, 18 and I would be on the fast track. The quiz talks about your overall health, physical capabilities and your responses to food. I really think that I learned a lot more about myself and my body just by taking the quiz. From there it was really easy for me to understand the concepts of the book. The tips were very easy to implement and I started using the advice from the book immediately. Cravings, snacking and self control are my biggest issues and weaknesses. That is all covered in this book! This is the perfect book to have in your arsenal for getting on track with your health this year.

It’s important to note this is NOT a diet but a lifestyle change. This is not something that will tell you to not eat meats, or cut out anything with sugars(fruit) etc. Trust me you will love this book!

To help you I am giving away ONE Copy of, The Prime to one of my readers. Just leave a comment on this post telling me one goal you have for this year. Please make sure you are following me on Bloglovin. For an extra entry you can subscribe to my email newsletter.

  3. I would be very interested to take the quiz and explore that book. I have a very hard time with cravings, lack of self control, and binge eating. I actually have had trouble with that since I was a little girl. I have gained a lot of weight and really am trying to make losing and being healthy a priority 🙂

  8. Oh wow, this sounds really interesting! I’ve been really into books that allow me to learn something lately (versus I usually need a fiction book with a story that really captures my attention). One of my goals for this year is to read at least 6 books and I think I found another one to add to my list!

  9. what an interesting sounding book. A lot of diet books are starting to state that they are about lifestyle change and not dieting. Curious as to how this would hold up over the long term.

I have wanted to make a lifestyle change with my health for the longest time but I never seem to have self control. I let thinks take over and I go for the sugars and the things I crave. Maybe if I can get my husband onboard with me I can do it. I need accountability. I think I may need to crab a copy of this book for myself too.

My goal this year is to live one day at a time, instead of stressing about what might happen a year or even five years from now. I spend so much time waiting for the “life I want” to begin, that I forget that I have the power to make that life a reality now simply by enjoying my life for what it is in this moment in time.

I have hashimotos, gluten intolerance, lactose intolerance, rosacea, poor energy and cloudy brain. I have been working on these issues for years through a restrictive diet, various types of exercise, functional medicine, western medicine, and acupuncture, to name but a few of my issues and attempts at treating them. Inflammation is an underlying factor in many of these ailments, so if there is a diet that helps people with such serious diseases, I’m sure it would help me.
