First of all today I am guest posting in Main Street Chic’s “5 things I love” series. Go check out her blog!
Today on my 5 Do’s and A Don’t series I have my good friend Emily. Emily blogs over at Life of Emily. She is a fun sweet girl about to graduate from college. She has a keen sense of style and a good heart. We have become good friends over the last few months and I love our text convo’s.
Here is Emily!!
Hello everyone, it’s Emily from Life of Emily!
I am so excited to be a part of Neely’s 5 Do’s and a Don’t! If you follow me then it’s no secret I am obsessed with clothes/shoes/purses…..Neely and I are so much alike in that department! So, today, I am giving you 5 Do’s and a Don’t about style. Enjoy! 🙂
1) Do Take Risks
We all know our style boards on pinterest are bursting with new ideas to try! Guilty. But, do any of us actually ever get around to trying them? Probably not. Take more risks and try all of those outfit ideas. You’ve got nothing to loose!
2) Do Wear Animal Print…in Moderation
Animal Print has been in for a few years now, but I’ve always been a little scared to try it. I never wanted that “skanky” animal print look!! 😉 I now have a leopard print belt, flats, earrings, and a cardigan. Now, do I suggest wearing them all together? Absolutely not. But animal print is GREAT in moderation. Choose a piece of print and plan your outfit around it. It will look cute & put together…and not like you are wearing a jungle!
3) Do accessorize
I can’t tell you how important accessories are to me. I dress pretty “classically,” but I have so many fun pieces that I add to give my outfit a little spice! Stacks are very popular. I am always looking for a new bracelet to add to my stack. Big chunky necklaces are also great to add to a basic outfit.
4) Do buy classic pieces
Classic pieces are staples in a closet. Items such as button down shirts, plain shirts, jeans, and skirts can be transitioned in so many different ways. Different styles, different seasons and it’s so simple! Pinterest has made it super easy to get outfit ideas with classic pieces. My classics in my closet include black/nude heels, white/blue button down, a classic pair of jeans, black pants, and cardigans.
5) Do play with colors
Colors are so important in a wardrobe. I try not to have too many of one color (although I go crazy over black or blue anything). I also don’t abide by the “color rules” of what colors can only be worn during certain seasons. I love mix-matching colors. It gives you more room to play with the items in your closet….or have an excuse to go buy more 😉
and a don’t…..
DON’T spend big $$$ for trendy pieces
I have a rule. If I see a trendy item that I am loving but can’t name 5-10 different outfits I plan to wear it with then I either 1) don’t buy it or 2) don’t spend a lot of money on it. Trendy items usually go out of style within a season, so go to stores like Forever21 and H&M for cheap, trendy items and spend more money on classics. Do you really want to be stuck with a $500 pair of shoes you wore….once?
I am so glad Neely let me take over her blog today! I enjoyed writing this post! If you’d like to keep up with me, follow me here!

Great advice! I follow most of these rules except for maybe the risk taking one. I tend to stick with classics.
Great post! Very true about the trendy items. What a waste to overspend on them.
I can’t imagine buying $500 shoes anyway! But I definitely agree in investing in classic pieces and buy trendy on the cheap!
LOVE this post!! Great job Emily!
Great advice! I am all about buying classic pieces now as I get older, and I am entering the professional world! You can easily change up the accessories and make them more trendy and fun!

Great post! I agree with buying and sticking with the classics! Spicing them up a bit is always fun!
Great fashion advice! I think I do my best to experiment with fashion…most of the time.
Love this! Great post! Agree with everything and definitely believe in staple pieces! My roomie is hilarious b/c she calls random things staple pieces. I’m like “Do you know what that means?” She’ll call a leopard print bracelet a staple piece. Um no. ha! I definitely need to play more with color!
Totally agree with your rule on trendy items.
awesome post, emily! love it!
great tips! I love the one about animal print…in moderation. A printed scarf can make an outfit, but too much can kill it!
I can’t wait to wear cute clothes again!
LOVE her don’t on spending $$$ on trendy items! I don’t see how people fork out the money for some of their clothes!
Oh what a fabulous post! The only problem, I have such an urge to go shopping now:)
I love this post! So so fun. Her advice is spot on, and I adore the pictures she chose and the suggestions to go along with them. How wonderful!
