Hair and Makeup tips for going Grey

This is a contributing post not all opinions are those of A Complete Waste of Makeup

Be Brave – Go Grey

The follicles of our hair contain a pigment which produces melanin. Melanin is what gives us our hair colour. If we produce a lot of melanin our hair is darker and less melanin means light brown, fair or blonde hair. As we get older we produce less and less melanin, so that eventually our hair follicles don’t produce any melanin and our hair becomes completely grey.

Women usually start to cover the grey by dying their hair at the first sign of greyness and by the time their melanin production has fully depleted, they will have been using a colour for ten years or more.

Eventually there will come a time when covering the grey means visiting the hairdresser on a more regular basis. That’s fine if you have the time, if you enjoy going to the hairdressers (not every woman does) and you have the cash.

It takes anywhere between 6 months and a year, depending on the length of your hair, to get back to its natural colour after colouring.  But, what if you’re fed up trying to cover up and nervous about making the transition to a full head of grey hair? Well, there are solutions:

Low Lights

While your grey is coming through give it that salt and pepper look by having dark lowlights. This will give your hair a softer look.

Semi-Permanent Dye

Colouring your hair with a semi-permanent hair dye is labour intensive, you will have to have your roots done every 4 to 6 weeks, but once you’ve got a full head of grey hair you can take the plunge and stop colouring.

Highlights

As the grey is coming through you can have highlights, which will blend in with the grey and it won’t look quite so obvious.

Once you have made the transition and you now have a full head of grey hair, it is important to keep it in tip top condition.

Trim your Hair Regularly

A good trim will ensure that the coloured hair and the grey coming through are blended naturally and keep it conditioned to retain the hair’s natural softness.

Use a Shampoo for Grey Hair

There are plenty of brands on the market to choose from and a good shampoo will stop the grey from yellowing, which can be a problem.

Make-Up

Another important factor to consider is your make-up, you’ll probably need to change your normal colours and a make- over will boost your confidence and give you a new look.

Use softer tones on your eyes, silver, greys and coppers. Lips should be lighter, dark colours will make you look older. Cheeks should be rosy pink or coral and applied lightly. As the author of Blush Magic on myshowcase.com says: blusher really works it magic, when it comes to looking younger!

Once you have a full head of grey head, embrace your new colour. Grey is a sign of wisdom. Don’t let old fashioned perceptions influence you. You’re not old, you’re just grey.

My mother went naturally grey and looks fantastic. Me, not so much. I have a shock of grey… right in the back of my head, not exactly a sophisticated look… and now I’m salt and reddish, also not a very flattering look. So I use henna… I may not be able to rock the red hair in my 60s, but for now it works and makes my greys look like expensive highlights. As my skintone changes over the next decade or so, I’ll have to decide what to do with my hair — probably shift more blonde… I just don’t see myself going au natureul any time soon… and that’s OK.
