Writing a blog post is easy, but writing a blog post people want to read…not so much. It can be so frustrating to spend time on a post only to sit there and wait and wait for comments or interaction that doesn’t come. Knowing how to write a blog post people want to read is the biggest chunk of the battle. Once you know what types of posts are more likely to get interaction, the ideas will come to you!

Lists: Did you know that people are drawn to articles with lists? How many Buzzfeed articles have you clicked on that said 22 things about this or 17 reasons why this? It’s because our minds work better with lists. It also helps that I am a mostly Type A person who lives by lists, but these are my favorite types of posts to read. Also, any of my posts with lists get read 3X more than my posts without lists. My 10 inexpensive date nights post has been viewed more than 30,000 times and shared more than 12,000 times. Case in point!
Something You Can Teach: I love to talk about blogging. It’s what I know, and what I do all day. So a lot of my posts center on blog tips I can share with my readers and teach them. This also works for other interests as well. Are you great at the cat eye look? Do you do an amazing smokey eye makeup tutorial? Do a post about it and let your readers learn from you! They are more likely to not only read the post, and save the post, but also share the post. Like I mentioned last week that’s a great way to boost your page views!
A Personal Story: I have noticed when I touch on something more personal that people can relate to, it gets a ton of interaction. This is going to be the area people are less likely to want to do because putting yourself out there is scary. But sharing something personal is not only great because people can usually relate/commiserate/sympathize, but because it can also be therapeutic.
DIY: I am not a huge DIY person. I think I have posted exactly one. It was last year and it is my Easy Fall Wreath DIY. BUT….that post has been pinned somewhere around 48K times. That is A LOT. It also got a ton of interaction and got shared on Michaels Facebook page at the time. This goes along with what I said above about people loving posts they can learn from. A DIY is a great way to teach, and a great way to share pretty pictures too!
Yummy Recipe: I swear Pinterest was invented to share DIY’s and yummy recipes! I know that I love to read blogs when they have recipes posted. Even better if the recipe has less than 5 ingredients. But seriously, sharing a recipe, big or small, easy or tough, is a great way to get interaction. Snap some beautiful photos to go along with it, and not only do you have a post people want to read, but you have a post people want to share! How much do you like finding new recipes? Think about it!
So there you have it. It’s not rocket science, but it is how to write a blog post people want to read, and a few tips in there about how to get them shared as well.
If you like this post you should save it on Bloglovin 🙂
You should also check out my blogging courses. I talk so much about this topic and SO MANY more in these courses, and I would love to share them with you. You can also read why my courses are so different than all of the other ones you see online! You can also see what people who have taken them have said about them.
Everyone LOVES DIY!!! And I’m trying so hard to jump on the band wagon and be good with it. Personally, my strength is writing heartfelt posts. My readers love the honestly and rawness. Great post!
I loved this. Not that I have been the best blogger lately, but I can do a list like no one else! P.S. miss you!
I’ve noticed the lists thing. And I also like to talk about blogging! I know when I was first starting out, I probably read every blogging tip on the internet… lots of research! So keep these posts comin’! 🙂
Now to think of a way to incorporate all that in to my own blog posts….. 🙁
I feel the exact same way! I try not to cram my brain with so many blog-imrpovement posts. I suggest you take it all one at a time. Try just writing all the impertinent info down in a notebook dedicated to blogging. Then assign a time or day to actually work on old posts and revise them accordingly. Yay for no stress!
I like to help people with things just like this, minimizing stress and being more productive. Check out my blog if you need any more tips! I hope this helped.

GREAT ideas. I have found all of this to be absolutely true as far as personal stories go. Thanks for the tips, Miss Neely. I need to come up with some lists and such.
Thanks for the tips 🙂 I am a very list orientated person, I have been noticing that a lot of posts that are viewed a lot or that I even view a lot are lists of things!
Also, I love the buzzfeed reference! 🙂
great tips! I love list posts and DIYs as well!
Great post….definitely all very true! I also struggle with the diy/tutorials. Not because I can’t do them they just take so much time to create. We are so busy as is, I don’t often think about photographing the things we are creating until after the project is done. Cheers
I do most of these things. Except the DIY stuff. I guess I’ll have to learn a new talent 🙂
I wish I could DIY or make food, but alas, I just have personal stories to share….and other’s stories too.
Hey,
You shared some really good tricks. I personally agree with three LISTS. I will also try the other tricks.
Anyway keep up the good work.
This is great post – thank you so much for your tips. Even though we should always write posts for ourselves, we all want to be heard and seen! I will keep these points in mind when I’m writing new content. Thanks a lot! x
These are awesome tips! I especially love your tip on writing what you know, because I feel like that’s what people forget to write about! They write things that other people have written, even though they don’t necessarily have experience with it.
I have been thinking about how to get more interaction on my blog lately! I used to have a LOT of interaction, but nowadays not so much. This is an excellent list! How-to’s and lists are always the best way to grab attention.
PS – I am a huge fan of other bloggers who love coffee as well. We could be kindred spirits. 🙂

Thanks Neely, I’ve been struggling in this area lately it seems. Seems like the better “I” feel I write over the years of practice, the less interaction I get. I appreciate the new ideasc
Great tips! I’ve seen the same thing with personal posts. When people can relate, it gets the conversation flowing!
This is a struggle for me, as an artist how do I make people want to look at my blog? What can I offer them outside of my paintings?
I have also noticed the thing with lists! Almost to the point that I try not to write them…maybe this is a bad move on my part? lol. Sometimes I feel like a well executed list post is more difficult than it seems, and if you just throw one to gather its still no good! Thank you for the tips! I always get the most interactions from my personal posts!
Thank you for sharing these great tips and ideas for blog content! I love your site’s layout too, by the way 🙂
I struggle to even think about posting recipes…it just seems like EVERYONE posts recipes…I’m looking to stand apart from other mommy blogs…in a significant way…any advice?
Thanks fos sharing!
This is such great advice! From someone starting out I’m totally inspired by your advice and have a few great ideas to start with now.. Thanks!!

This is so useful for me! Thanks you . I love your blog’s design BTW. It is beautiful !!! http://www.verylively.com
Thanks for the post. Awesome guide for beginners. All the points you mentioned are correct. I knew some points before but also got new ones. Write post which provides informative, quality, motivating information which makes your blog an ultimate.
Moreover, the headlines matter, it’s true. That’s why, try to always check my headlines. But I think On page SEO is one of the important points to remember while writing the high-quality blog post. Also, don’t forget to make your keyword research, and you need to have your own blogging/writing style.
I believe that the quality of the content you write is more important than the number of posts or the number of words. Quality, Grammar, Easy Reading and Long text are the four pillar of a high-quality post.
Anyways, it’s a great article and great tips for newbie bloggers. Doing all this stuff will definitely deliver the value customers are looking for.
I can’t seem to get with the DIY thing either, even though I wish I could.
Great tips, I think my blog is on the write track since I use some of these methods mentioned in your post.
