How To Stay Fit While Traveling

As someone who loves the gym, routines, and working out, one thing I dread is travel. Not because I don’t LOVE to travel, because I DO! But what can be difficult is finding ways to get your workout in. Sure some hotels have gyms, but you never know what equipment they will have. Then what if you are somewhere where there is no gym? Then what? Or maybe you’re visiting friends or family and staying at someone’s house. Today I’m going to show you how to stay fit while traveling so that you never have to worry about it again!

Tip 1 – Do Your Research: Know where you are going! Are you going to a big city and staying with friends? Are you going to a resort with a state of the art gym? Does the resort offer fitness classes at certain times? Will you be in a remote lake house with nothing local? Be prepared because if you fail to plan you plan to fail. Especially with workouts!

Tip 2 – Check Out Local Classes: Whenever we travel to a city, even a smaller city, I always see if there are local barre or spin classes. Whenever we go to Houston to see Andrew’s family I try to squeeze in barre classes at my favorite studio there. I also recently noticed they opened a SoulCycle, which I plan to try next time. When I go to Chicago or NYC I always take Bar Method or Physique 57. When we went to San Diego and San Francisco I tried local classes there too. When we visited DC there was a barre class literally three doors down from our hotel. A little research ahead of time, like I said above and I now know where to workout in most major cities!

Tip 3 – Bring Your Workout With You: Recently we spent a weekend at a lake house. There was no way to workout nearby. No hotel for a gym and no classes. I brought resistance bands, a jump rope, and an arsenal of no equipment Pinterest workouts with me! I managed to workout every day we were there, even if it was 25-30 minutes, it was better than nothing. Plus I felt good about eating my weight in chips and salsa! You can find great travel workout products on Amazon or at Target that are easy to pack with you and don’t take up much space or weight. So even if you are flying and not driving you can bring your workout with you.

Tip 4 – Walk!: Major cities, small towns, and even around lakes you can walk walk walk! Walking is always better than doing nothing. One thing I love about visiting a city like Chicago is how walk-able it is. All the times I have gone, I have logged well over 10K steps per day and even if I hadn’t taken any classes I sure was feeling it with all the walking. When we went to the lake we found trails and even just walked for a while pretty close to our house. There is always an opportunity to walk. Walking can be a great way to fit in some calorie burning.

Staying fit while travelling is always a challenge for me because I don’t want to waste a minute of my trip at the gym. Luckily I’m a huge walker and usually burn enough calories that way. Walking is also such a fun way to explore a new city.
