Tips To Keep Hair Color Lasting Longer

So a few weeks ago I did something not too drastic but big for someone who doesn’t LOVE change. I colored my hair. I actually colored it last summer and it looked awful, but I have a new hairstylist now, so all is well. I just did all over color about a shade darker than my natural hair color. It wasn’t a huge difference that people could tell, but I love it. My main problem with hair color is that it fades easily and you have to keep it up. As someone who hates to sit for too long and isn’t a huge fan of spending tons of money on my hair every other month, this was the biggest negative for me. So here are my tips to keep hair color lasting longer.

Keep Hair Color Lasting Longer

Tip 1 Use good quality products: I have used expensive hair products before and I have also used hair products you can buy at Target and let me tell you, the Target ones win. I have loved SheaMoisture products for a while now. I have blogged about them a few times. Recently I was at Target in the Salon aisle and grabbed a few of their color extend products to try out. This is what I tried:

  • Sea Kelp & Pearl Protein Color Extend Shampoo
  • Sea Kelp & Pearl Protein Color Extend Conditioner
  • Sea Kelp & Pearl Protein Color Extend Leave-In Conditioner

First of all this stuff smells AMAZING! I am really weird about smells (pregnancy probs) and this smells so good that even my husband asked what I was using! My hair is VERY thick and wavy, and finding hair products that work well with that and don’t have build-up can be hard. These SheaMoisture products make hair feel very clean. Bonus they make color extend! I have been using them for a few weeks and I have noticed that my color is not fading as quickly as it has in the past. Right now there is a great Ibotta offer for SheaMoisture products where you can get $2 back! Such an awesome incentive to try them. I also love that SheaMoisture products are made with natural and certified organic ingredients. Makes me feel like I’m not putting gunk into my hair. Here are a few shots of my hair pre wash, post wash, and after it’s dry. SheaMoisture also has a Peace Rose Oil Complex line to hydrate and soften dry, brittle hair and an Argan Oil & Almond Milk line to soften and detangle fine, frizzy, straight, and wavy hair.

Tip 2 Cut down on washing/styling: One thing every hairstylist I have ever had has told me is to not wash my hair every day and to minimize the use of heat. Meaning that it’s not necessary to dry, flatiron, and curl your hair super often. I try to only flat iron my hair once a week unless there is a special occasion. This helps tremendously not only making color last but keeping hair healthy and shiny!

Tip 3 Embrace the fade: If your hair color does fade slightly that’s OK! I personally love it when there’s a slight fade and it looks a bit more natural. So embrace the fade. Then use the above tips to keep your color where you like it for as long as possible. I would love to know what your tips to keep hair color lasting longer are. 2. Girl, I need some of this! It doesn’t matter if I color my hair at home or use a professional salon, but the color never seems to last longer than a month. Thanks for the recommendation!

  3. The not showering often tip is so vital! I have fallen in love with shower caps and dry shampoo ever since I decided to start coloring my hair a more vibrant shade of red.

  4. I’ve looked at that shampoo and conditioner before. I’m glad to hear such a good review! I might have to try it out. 🙂 And I’m the same way with washing my hair… I wash it every two or three days. I typically try to go every three days, but depending on what’s happening in life I might just go every two days. That helps so much!

  11. These are some great tips. I remember when I dyed my hair red how hard it was to keep the color bright and from becoming brassy.
