Toddler Road Trip Essentials

Liam is two and a half now and we really feel like at this point we have done enough travel with him to have a handle on what to expect and what to bring/pack etc. It really changes so much from traveling with a baby to traveling with a toddler. If I can tell any first time parents anything it’s that you should travel as much as you can while they aren’t mobile! I want to share some toddler road trip essentials with you guys that really come in handy for us no matter how long or short a trip is. These are also pretty essential for flights as well!

Toddler Road Trip Essentials

Tablet: OK hear me out. I know a lot of people are ANTI tablet. That’s great for them, but for us any travel day is about survival and if that means 5 hours straight of Paw Patrol then that’s what’s happening! We love the Amazon Kindle Fire Kids Tablet because you can watch shows, play educational games etc, plus even if Liam threw it out of a moving car going 200 mph they will replace it.

Entertainment: So to keep toddlers entertained it’s not just about tablets. We have an arsenal of things we bring. Some of our favorites are Melissa and Doug sticker books (the stickers can be removed and reused!) We also love the Water Wow books. They are great for road trips. The V-tech word and sound books are great learning tools and Liam loves them! He’s learned so many letters that way. I think any kind of coloring book/activity book is great at this age too. We always bring lots and lots of books either for Liam to flip through or for us to read to him.  Right now hes super into cars and dinosaurs so we always bring a few of those. Lastly, we don’t go anywhere without his array of lovies.

Snacks:  My biggest tip is to pack way more snacks than you think you will need. With flight delays or accidents that shut down highways, a quick travel day can end up being a super long annoying travel day and a hungry toddler (or hungry you) can lead to meltdowns and general unhappiness. These snack catcher cups are the best. The tops are super sturdy.

I would love to know how you survive long road trips or flights with toddlers.

What are your toddler road trip essentials or just travel essentials in general?

Unfortunately, my kiddos get motion sickness if they look at something for too long (kids Dramamine is a must), so they can’t use their kindles when we travel or do coloring/activity books. We keep a few hot wheels in the vehicle and they both choose a stuffed animal to play with in the car. Their water cups are always in reach, and we have so many snacks. For snacks, I always bring crunchy things. I don’t want something sticky to get in the car seats. Crunchy crumbs are easy to vacuum!

I used to be anti-tablet, now I make sure I have backup batteries! Do what you gotta do is my favorite motto. Lol. Planning a big trip with my 3 year-old next month. Fingers crossed it goes well!

  5. I am passed the toddler stage with my daughter. She is an adult now. However, I wish I had some of these items when she was small and I was taking her traveling.
