What I Learned Taking Walks Outside Every Day For A Month

Every month I make a post with my goals for that month. In September one of them was to take a walk outside every day (weather permitting). There was really no reason behind it other than I really love walks and wanted to see if it was something I could keep up with. I am great about working out every day but I wanted to add this in. What I did not expect was what I would learn taking walks outside every day for a month.

What I Learned Taking Walks Outside Every Day For A Month

It’s healing: There were days I did not feel my best and going for the walks really made me feel better. The fresh air and Vitamin D really work wonders and I was so surprised by just how good I felt all around after each walk. Even when it was 100+ degrees outside. I always felt great after.

It’s therapeutic: If you are in a bad mood or having a bad day I promise you a walk outside will fix it immediately. The combo of the fresh air, sun, and sounds of nature are SO SOOTHING!

It gave me time for things I love: I love listening to music and podcasts and I don’t get to do that a ton. So this became a huge time of podcast listening for me. I was able to catch up on some of my favorites and find new ones I really loved. I also used this time to catch up with friends via phone calls or Marco Polo.

It was THE BEST break: Working from home I sit in front of a computer most of the day. When I am not in front of the computer I am doing laundry, making lunches, running errands, etc. To me having this 45-60 minutes every day where I knew I got a break was key. The time I went changed every day so it was great to go when I felt like I was hitting a wall.

I have decided to continue this into October and so far so good on walks. I find that it’s something I really look forward to every day and it really makes me so happy. I really encourage everyone to try taking walks outside every day for a month and see what happens!

Walks are as good for the spirit as they are for the body. I have to take one every day.

Hubby and I went for a 5 mile walk yesterday. It was so lovely. We had bouts of silence and other times where we had wonderful conversation. It was like a mini vacation too.

This is awesome! We are about to start riding bikes to school and I love that time outside, too. Now you’re making me want to go take walks on the days I’m not working at school.

Getting outside everyday is so important for emotional wellbeing. My sweet hubby will remind me when I start getting out of sorts. Outdoor time keeps me grounded.

I really need to get back into walking but at the moment I’m just too cold. And too anxious to really go outside without my husband for support.

A daily walk is a great idea, and I think it’s even better when you have a nice, natural place nearby to take the walk. Even if you don’t, it’s still beneficial just to take a walk around the neighborhood.

  9. Aaawwww…you are so me, Neely! Years back before I joined the university, I used to walk everyday. Then, I shelved it for a good number of years till last year when I resumed it. I only wish I had not shelved it. I love walking and look forward to it, everyday.

  10. I remember going for walks during the summertime to the park and thinking, ‘wow’, there are many things I can do out here. The peace of mind it brings – it’s worth it.

Walking is such a great routine to have in place. I need to be more active especially sitting at a desk all day.

  12. Ahh yes!! Long walks are my absolute favorite! In NYC we walked all the time and in the country we have no where to go. I’m so excited to be moving to the beach so we can go on long walks by the beach!
