5 Things I Do To Regulate When Things Feel Too Much

I have been in consistent therapy for nearly 18 months when I say that it’s the single most important thing I have done for myself in my adult life I am not exaggerating. It has taught me so much about myself and made me realize so much about my past. When things feel really hard I try to do a some of these 5 things to regulate myself and center myself.

5 Things I Do To Regulate When Things Feel Too Much

I make a to do list: I am a pen and paper girl and also the type of person who needs a brain dump. When I feel overwhelmed either by a busy week, busy day, or just emotions bubbling to the surface it helps to write it down. Seeing my day on paper makes it feel way less overwhelming to me. Adding in simple tasks I know I can cross off makes me feel more in control.

I go for a walk or do a workout: This is something I try to start each day with anyway but sometimes when I feel really overwhelmed going for a walk even a quick one can set me right.

I do something for ME: This could be as simple as a face mask, watching a show, baking, just something thats for me that I enjoy.

I do something for someone else: This for me may be helping my husband or kids with something, playing with the kids, doing something for a friend or family member etc.

I talk it through with myself: Why am I feeling this way? Is this feeling valid or did I spiral? Reminding myself I am safe and OK.

These coping mechanisms have helped me SO MUCH! If you are ever feeling overwhelmed I highly suggest trying these things.
