As I get older I find myself leaning on my mom more and more. She is truly my best friend and I feel lucky to call her such. With Mother’s Day coming up I wanted to take some time and talk about 5 things my mom taught me. These aren’t necessarily profound wisdom, but all things I think are important.

- Manners first: My mom has always been huge on manners. She swears one of the first things I learned was saying “please and thank you.” She also taught me early the art of writing thank you notes and saying “bless you” when someone sneezes, even in public and even if you don’t know them. She also taught me that smiling at strangers is considered good manners as well. These manners lessons have brought me far in life and something I know I will instill in our future children.

- Make time for the people you love: While it’s important to work and spend time by yourself, making time for the people you love is very important as well. My mom is the first person to bring dinner over if someone has surgery, a baby, or an ill family member. She is the first person to call someone and see how they are doing. She is the first person to invite EVERYONE over for Thanksgiving and she includes everyone in everything. She is such a great example of how you treat the people important to you. She always makes time for me no matter how busy she is. She owns her own business and works constantly, but never lets that get in the way.
- There is very little a mani/pedi and a good cry can’t fix: My mom is a big believer in feel your feelings. If you are happy, laugh. If you are sad, then cry. Either way, get a mani/pedi! We started getting manicures and pedicures together when I was little and it’s something I really look forward to. I remember the Friday before my wedding getting manicures and pedicures with my mom and best friends and how special and important it felt. It is truly something I want to remember forever. Whenever I am having a bad day and I tell her I’m going to get a manicure and pedicure she says “great that will help!” It always does. She is also a big believer in crying. Crying when you are happy or sad or mad. No matter what that cry will make you feel so much better!
- Actions speak louder than words: This is something she taught me so early in life. You say you’re sorry and that’s great, but your actions will speak louder than words. The same goes for “I love you” or “You’re important to me.” Just saying things doesn’t make them true. You have to show people. She is amazing at that. If she loves you or hates you, trust me you’ll know!
- See the movie: I can remember the first movie she took me to. It was The Little Mermaid and I was 5. It has always been one of my favorite movies since that day. We have now seen hundreds of movies together either in the theater or at home. We have a tradition of seeing movies on Christmas and always watching as many Oscar nominated movies as we can. We, of course, have our favorite actors and actresses and we try to see fun movies together as much as possible. With Mother’s Day holiday coming up, it was great timing for the movie, Mother’s Day, in theaters April 29th, to be released! We plan on seeing it on Mother’s Day and I think it will be the perfect mother/daughter outing. Maybe we will get some mani/pedis too! How can you turn down a movie with Kate Hudson, Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston!? You can’t.

If you haven’t seen the trailer for this SUPER cute movie check it out:
These 5 things my mom taught me barely scratch the service of what I have learned from her. I can’t wait to see this movie with my mom and remind her of all the amazing things she’s taught me that I hope to pass on to my future child/children! Get tickets at Fandango.

Moms do know best. Be sure to tell your moms thank you for all they have done and do.
My mom taught me everything I know. I would be lost without what she taught me.
I love the “make time for those you love!” You know…I will have to put some thought into what my mom taught me. I know one thing for sure, she taught be to be frugal!
Make time for those you love!! I love this whole post!
I love this post! Make time for the ones you love!!!
what a great Post in tribute to your mom! Especially now love number 3!Lol Actually, they were all good.
My mom is my favorite person. I know I’m getting more and more like her every day, probably because she taught me everything I know…
Such a wonderful post, you have learned so much from your Mom! My foster mom has taught me true forgiveness and faith in God after she forgave my sister’s husband for her murder. My mom is amazing!!
I”m treating my mom to go see this for her Mother’s Day gift. Told her about it and she’s already very excited!
Always teach kids how to chew with their mouth closed!
mama definitely always knows best! These are wonderful lessons that I certainly learned at a young age from my mom!
xoxo

I LOVE this post! These are some great (and fun) lessons to learn from an important woman in your life. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
I took my mom to a movie over the weekend and it was so fun! I totally want to see this movie too!
Manis/Pedis ALWAYS make things better. Love this list!!
I love the making time for those you love and the movies. Movies are big in our house. Mothers know!
I just love this post, thank you for sharing! I lost my mom over six years ago and I miss her every day. She was my best friend as well.
Now, I have become a mother myself, and all of her wisdoms are coming out as I am learning how to raise a little one too.
The greatest thing I learned from my mom is Laughter is the Best Medicine, no matter what was going on my mom knew how to get us to find the humor in every situation!
Moms do know best! As a new mom myself, I have learned alot from my mom and learned that she didn’t always have the easiest job raising us.
My Mom is the greatest. I think the one thing she taught me that I remember the most is to treat others the way that you want to be treated.
My mom passed away a few years ago. When I think of what she taught me was to always have open mind and open heart with others, to love conditionally, to be honest and not to hold back. Life is short. I like the saying there is very little a mani/pedi and a good cry can’t fix. That made me smile.
I loved this! The mani/pedi one is one of my favorites because yes! 🙂

Aw! What would we do without our moms!
That movie looks really cute! I may need to see that one!
And my mom has taught me so much, but the most important thing she’s taught me is to hold tight to my faith and to love Jesus <3
This is such a great post to honor your mama. She sounds like an absolute treasure. I’d be so lost without my mama and I think we need to make manis/pedis a more regular thing together! I can’t wait for this movie. It has some of my favorite actresses in it!
Lovely post! I love the idea to go see the movie as a mother/daughter outing! Yay!
I love this post! My Mom is also a big believer in actions speaking louder than words, and that is something I heard regularly growing up. It is a good message.
What a lovely post! It’s so nice you and your Mom are so close and can spend the day together. My Mom lives across the country but we are planning a weekend soon. Mom’s are special, aren’t they?
I am so looking forward to this movie!!
This is such a lovely post. I’m so close to my mum and even at 43 years old, she’s still teaching me so much. xx
That movie looks hilarious! I will have to see it!
I love that your mom taught you manners. All moms should be sure to impart those on their kids, and seeing this movie together is a fantastic idea!
Your mom gives amazing advice!
Your Mother definitely taught you some very important things! I hope to be able to pass this on to my daughters too.
One of my daughters saw the trailer for this movie and announced that we need to go. I can’t wait!!
My mom was my only parent so she for sure taught me basically everything I know. your mom gives some great advice!
What a sweet post! My mom has taught me a lot of things that is for sure! Manners is one lesson she instilled in me and I am so happy she did. Also making time for loved one’s is another thing. You never know when someone may no longer be around, so cherish those moments. 🙂
I’m so excited to go see this movie. I told my boyfriend already he has to take me lol
Ahh this is so sweet, I love your tradition of going to see a movie together. I am big on teaching my daughter manners too, you never regret being polite.
I remember my mom’s favourite saying was , “roll with the punches.” If things didn’t work out the way we wanted to we would make them work somehow, or we would take things as they were. My mom is very smart and wise.
Moms really are the best. I’ve learned so much from mine too!
Aww, love this! She sounds like a very special woman! I also learned so much from my mom. I don’t know where I’d be without her. I’m definitely a better mom because of her.
My mom is one of my best friends too. A lot of these are things my mom taught me as well 🙂 I am dying to see that movie.
xoxo, Jenny
moms are truly the BEST!!!!! i live so far from away from her but still we stay connected via phone. hope you will have a lovely mother’s day 🙂
I love this. It’s amazing the things that stick with us, and the lessons our moms teach us that they show us through actions and not words. <3
Great post. All moms are awesome, that’s why I love my mom and I always follow what she wants for me, for my future.
Moms are the best! You truly don’t appreciate them until you become one!
It really is so important to make time for the people you care about. Everything goes by so quickly, and it’s too late before you know it.
This is so sweet. I can’t wait to see this movie btw. My mother lost her mother 8 months ago and I randomly start crying at the thought of losing her, the older I get the closer we get as women, who listen and respect each other. Great post.
I lost my mom way too early, but it taught me that spending time with the people you love is more important than any ‘thing’ you can give them.
Lovely post! My mom will probably never know just how special she is. She’s that unselfish. This reminds me that I need to do my best to make sure she gets it. <3
Great idea for a post!! I agree that movies are so enriching and I always forget how great they are as a shared activity. xo
My Mom and I are almost complete opposites in every way. But she did manage to teach me to be sincere and to be myself no matter what.
It sounds like you and your mom are very close! The Mother’s Day movie looks so cute! I can’t wait to watch it!
I love this post. So sweet. My mom taught me that a sense of humor can help you get through almost any situation. 🙂
My mom taught me SO MUCH, but a few specifics are: how to garden, how to play the piano, why less is more with makeup, why brains are beauty, and why forgiveness is key to a low stress life.
