My first memory of watching an award show was around 2nd grade. My mom and I piled in her bed with snacks and a Dr. Pepper for me. It was the Golden Globes and she told me it was the party of the year!
I remember the Red Carpet, the clothes on everyone. I remember the speeches. It was the year of Sister Act, Honeymoon in Vegas, A Few Good Men and Scent of a Woman. I vividly remember seeing those movies with my mom and dad in the theater.
Flash forward several years and my mom and I had a deal. We see all award nominated movies. The first year I did this was my senior year of high school. Even if my mom didn’t want to see something that year I saw it. I was so proud to be able to fill out my ballot and know I had seen all the movies.
Flash forward several MORE years. We kept doing this even in college I would come home for the weekends of award shows. When I didn’t live at home I would go to my moms house. Obviously things are changing. I am married now and neither of us have tons of time to see movies. Plus going to the movies is a lot more expensive now than it was then. Sure there are tons of ways to see movies for free and we did get sneak preview passes to a bunch this year.
This year I think I’ve gone back to my ways of watching more award show movies than I have in the past few years. Last year I had just gotten engaged and was distracted with wedding planning. But this year I’ve seen so many great ones. My mom and I saw Gone Girl and Wild together. I watched Still Alice and Boyhood as well as The Grand Budapest Hotel. We still plan to watch The Theory of Everything, Selma and Birdman. I saw Whiplash. Andrew and I plan to watch The Imitation Game and American Sniper.
I hope if I have a daughter someday I can share this Award Show Season tradition with her and she will find the love of movies that I found at such a young age. I love the bonding time with my mom and I love talking about the movies with her. As I’ve become an adult our conversations have gone from “oh it was good” to really in depth discussions about characters, plot lines and even movie scores.

Also mom if you are reading this: Thank you for letting me stay up way past my bedtime on Oscar night growing up. Thank you for teaching me to love movies and appreciate everything that goes into filmmaking. Lastly, thank you for our tradition. I love it.

Award Show season is so much fun! The fashion – the slip up’s – I love it all! I still need to see a few! My bf and I try and go to Valley View as much as we can – Tickets are $6 at night and $4 during the day! It’s sketchy – but brings me back to my hillcrest days haha! Still Alice is on my list to go see soon!
My award show season traditions involve avoiding the areas where the award show are filmed, and complaining endlessly when I get caught in traffic!

What a fun tradition! I usually don’t get into the awards shows a ton, but I will make sure to tune in if I particularly like one of the nominees that year. When I was 13, my friend and I had an Oscar party so we could see how many awards “Titanic” got! 🙂

What a fun tradition to have with your mom! My mom isn’t always into the award movies, so we don’t do that together even though I try to see them all. But I get to go to media screenings of movies every once in awhile and she’s always the first person I invite.
My fave part of award season is the red carpet fashion. I love seeing what the celebs are wearing. It is so nice that you have such sweet memories of watching the award shows with your mom!
