I am partnering with the Invisalign® brand, but all opinions expressed are my own. Full disclosure
Remember my last post about Invisalign® clear aligners? I’m excited to share that I received my first set of clear aligners and started my treatment! I’m a few weeks into treatment now and wanted to share my three tips to make Invisalign easier to adjust to and helped keep me comfortable as my mouth adjusted to starting treatment.
Tip #1:
Take an anti-inflammatory before you put in new clear aligners, which is every two weeks. Needless to say, just as I am getting used to one set, it’s time to trick my mouth and put a new set in. Sometimes it can be painful, especially in the first few days, but taking an anti-inflammatory about an hour before I put the new trays in, has helped for sure.
Tip #2:
Warm water for the win: When your mouth is sore, swishing warm–even hot water–around in your mouth for a few minutes is very helpful and adding a little salt to it really helps take down some of the inflammation. This has been a lifesaver.
Tip #3:
Put the new clear aligners in at night…a tip I received from Dr. Kanabar! She said the day I need to switch the clear aligners to a new set, put them in at night, right before I go to bed, which I have done and it works! Especially combined with my first tip. The first 10-12 hours you are getting used to the new clear aligners you are asleep for most of it. By the time you wake up you may be a little sore, but most of the soreness has worn off.
If you are ever thinking about getting Invisalign clear aligners, I can’t recommend these tips enough.
I look forward to sharing the rest of my Invisalign clear aligners journey with you and click here to take a smile assessment to find out if Invisalign clear aligners is right for you!

I have a big overbite, and I have often thought about doing Invisalign. Thanks for the tips.
It has been suggested that an anti-inflammatory may actually slow down tooth movement to some extent. You may wish to advise the use of acetaminophen or Tylenol.
The use of Invisalign Chewies is also helpful in reducing pain. Ask your orthodontist if they have some Chewies to use to help seat your trays and the chewing will also reduce discomfort in many instances. Chewies are one of the most popular adjuncts to Invisalign treatments. http://www.kalamazooorthodontics.com/Treatment-Innovations/Our-Innovations/Innovative-Invisalign-reg.aspx
Also Using Acceledent has made our patients so happy with no pain and one week advancements through their trays.
I just got mine today, they feel so sharp to my tongue! Anyone else experience this and have any tips?
I work with Invisalign patients every day. You can use an emery board on the edges to smooth them down. Also if you are not using Acceledent with your trays it is an amazing product to speed up your treatment. You only wear your trays one week each. Ask your orthodontist about Acceledent!!! It is worth every penny, the results are amazing in our patients. And that goes for patients in braces also. And all say that they have no pain when moving to next tray.
Use a nail file to smooth the edges
Thank you for sharing! I just went and had the consultation where I saw what the retainers will do for my teeth. SO excited. I have to go in next week to get my “buttons” put on (are they really visible?) but these tips will help a ton. I had braces and all that jazz when I was younger, so I’m used to the soreness (though totally wish I would’ve kept those retainers in so my teeth would’ve stayed straight….). Can’t wait to get started!
Thanks again!
Hi Neely!
Thank you for sharing your tips and experiment! I am also starting my Invisalign treatment soon, so I am looking for any tips to be better prepared.
I am little bit worried about the pain when wearing my new aligners. I will definitely try your tips to try to cope with any uncomfortable feeling! Such a smart idea to wear the new ones at night!
I cannot wait to start my treatment, and even more, to see the results!
Hey Neely,
I agree with you. Taking a anti-inflammatory has helped me as well when changing to new aligners. However, I can’t help but wonder whether there is a possibility that my system might building a tolerance to this medication as lately I have been feeling a bit more pain than usually. I might have to try out your tip with warm salty water, hopefully that helps. Cheers!
My trays have not hurt but feel snug. Teeth feeling loose is normal too.
Thank you so much for these tips! I start my treatment this coming week and was trying to research and prepare. So glad I came across this post!
