Summer Skin Protection

Summer-Skin-Protection

I have talked on the blog several times about how fair skinned I am. It’s something I have been dealing with my entire life. I was jaundice when I was first born and my parents say that my skin was sensitive since I was a baby. As an adult I take a lot of precautions when it comes to my skin. Since the summer months are fast approaching and I am already seeing Instagrams and Snaps of people at the pool, I want to take some time and talk about why summer skin protection is important.

I have seen too many family members and good friends suffer from Melanoma and I think it’s something we just don’t think about enough. You think “oh I put sunscreen on at the beach and pool,” but what about the rest of the time?

Here are some simple steps to summer skin protection:

  1. Regular Check Ups: I can not stress enough how important it is to see a Dermatologist once a year. I go every year for skin checks and honestly I wish it was twice a year. It takes very little time, but it can be the difference between literal life and death. My dad waited too long to see a doctor when he was sick and his cancer had already spread. Thankfully he fought through it, but it could have been a lot easier on him had he not waited. If you notice something different or strange on your skin see a doctor. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
  2.  SPF Your Skin: I never leave the house without SPF on my face and neck. I just don’t. It takes a few extra minutes of getting ready but it’s so important! You should be using an SPF 30 or higher when outside, as recommended by the AAD. I usually use RoC’s multitasking moisturizers now that the weather is warmer and more time will inevitably be spent outdoors! I usually use the RoC® MULTI CORREXION® 5 in 1 Chest, Neck, and Face Cream along with some sunscreen! It keeps my skin soft and protected. RoC moisturizers can help protect against future sun damage when used with other sun protection measures!RoC-3

  3. Limit Your Time In Direct Sunlight: There are just so many ways to get a tan without being in direct sunlight. Even if you are working in a garden, or playing with your kids outside, remember to wear a hat and sunglasses and try to limit the time spent in direct sunlight. Since my skin is so fair I honestly try to stay in the shade under an umbrella when spending time with family at the pool or beach.

These tips are not limited to JUST summer! You really should be protecting your skin all year round. Just because it’s warm outside does not mean that’s the only time skin damage can occur. Summer skin protection is important, but everyday skin protection is the goal.

Great tips, and a great reminder to see the dermatologist. I’ve been putting it off, but I really need to go. I’ve always had a lot of moles and freckles, so I need to be more diligent.

I too have fair skin. I stay out of the sun as much as possible but when I do go out I wear sunscreen and a hat 🙂
