Tips For Shopping At ALDI

Moving to the suburbs one thing that was prevalent was that there was no shortage of grocery stores to shop at. Seriously in a 15 mile radius of our house we pretty much have everything! Recently we made our first shopping trip to ALDI. I had seen ADLI and heard about it lots of times, but being a creature of habit we had never gone. If you are someone who has never been before I want to share a few tips for shopping at ALDI and what to expect!

Tips For Shopping At ALDI

Tip 1 Bring Bags: Remember to bring reusable bags to ALDI, although if you forget they do have plastic and paper bags available for purchase. I always keep a few reusable bags in my car and they came in very handy! Reusable bags are also helping the environment, so it’s a win for everyone. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to bag the groceries. There is an area to do that or you can bag them at your car which is what we did.

Tip 2 Bring change: At ALDI, you deposit a quarter to use a cart (you get your deposit back at the end!) This helps keep costs down by keeping carts out of the parking lot, and they pass those savings on to you

Tip 3 Be ready to see new brands and familiar brands: I assumed (wrongly) that ALDI would only have their own exclusive brands. NOPE! Though 90% of ALDI products are private label, we found lots of our usual brands that we buy often in the ALDI Finds aisle. ALDI Finds are premium food and household products that are only in stores for a limited time and advertised via the store’s weekly ads on aldi.us. Andrew got his Diet Coke, I got my Ghirardelli Double Chocolate Brownie Mix, and Andrew found his favorite shampoo! They also have a lot of organic and natural ALDI exclusive brands. Looking at the ingredients you will see that these products are pretty similar to things found at other grocery stores.

Other ALDI first time observations:

  • People were very friendly and helpful
  • I was pleasantly surprised by how much great produce there was. We eat a lot of fruits and veggies and it was nice to see such an awesome selection.
  • They have more than JUST groceries. There are toiletry items, gift items, and even toys!
  • The checkers are SUPER fast! Seriously I blinked and he had scanned everything.
  • The prices really can’t be beat. We got everything for $50.04! That’s pretty incredible.
  • The ALDI near us is open 9AM-9PM so not a super early or late night store. Just make sure you check your local ALDI times.

Will we return to ALDI? Absolutely! It’s a great grocery store and now that I know what to expect I will be more prepared for my next visit. I highly encourage you to check out your local ALDI and see all they have to offer.

  1. I have to work today still, but I get to work from home which meant a little extra time to get in an episode of Gilmore Girls before I needed to start working. Now I’m counting down until work is done so I can get cozy with some tea and watch more.

My major tip for shopping at Aldi is to make a list! I find that with the layout of the store if you miss something on an aisle (especially on the first aisle when you walk in) it’s hard to go back. It’s almost like a maze and you just have to go with the flow of the people.

I LOVE Aldi! It is so much cheaper than other stores and their products are great quality. You just can’t beat it!
Next time you go, try their frozen chicken breast. It is surprisingly delish!

  5. I’ve only been to Aldi twice, they aren’t very close by to me. We used to have a simiar store back in the day and reusable bags were a must.

  6. I tried to shop for an entire month the first time I went to Aldis. I live over an hour from one, so it was the only way to make the trip worth it. The store was fun and interesting, but it was exhausting trying to do it all alone with a baby in tow, too. Maybe if we lived closer to one!

  7. We love shopping at Aldi. We can save so much on our grocery bill by shopping there, and they have great produce and meats. I remember the first time we went, we had no idea about the quarter for a cart! I love the idea though, since it keeps carts out of the parking lot.

  9. I seriously love shopping at ALDI. I know that everything is going to be fresh, and not have any gross chemicals, and it is SO much cheaper. If you forget bags, they sometimes have extra boxes around that you can take for free!

I love Aldi! We have been shopping there since our pre schooler was a baby and what a saving we made. A fortnightly shop used to range fro £120 – £180. Started shopping at Aldi and it cut it down to between £60 and £100 (depending on if we needed to add wipes and nappies, Aldi nappies and wipes are excellent by the way). A new one has opened which is a 10 minute walk from our house and we love it. I now hate going to other supermarkets because the checkout assistants are so slow at getting everything through haha.

I love how you have to point out that you need to put a quarter in the trollies. Loads of our supermarkets do that in Scotland that I get so excited when I go to one and don’t have to find a coin. Similarly we have a law in the UK now that if you have to use a bag (any shop not just supermarkets) you have to pay 5p so all of us now have cars full of reuseable bags and extra ones in our handbags. People moaned when the law came out but now its just the norm. So much better for the environment 🙂

    Happy Shopping!

I wish they would have that law here in the States. I know some cuties and states have banned plastic bags. New York and California I believe.

Aldi comes from Germany. The stores are a bit different here. Putting a quarter into your cart helps ensure that you bring it back and not in the middle of the parking lot. That way they don’t need extra workers to collect all the carts.
Same thing with the bags and that you bag your own things. Another great source of saving costs and not needing extra workers to do that for you. Their own brands are produced by huge well-known companies incognito, so all Aldi products are really of a wonderful quality. I enjoyed shopping at Aldi both in the US as well as here in Germany. Great post encouraging others to give it a try. Aldi is a great way to shop quality for little money!

  15. I love Aldi! There is one two miles from my house. I find such great food items there. Also, I love that they have a revolving inventory of kitchen and house items. I have bought a few silicon cooking spatulas there. They are awesome!

YES! I love Aldi 🙂 I haven’t been in ages, but my family is German and I remember going as a little girl and really enjoying the grocery shopping experience. Maybe it was the bagging, or the quarter for the shopping cart… as a little girl, these things totally made my day 🙂

Also it’s incredible what you can find there, right?!

Have been there twice and seems they have good products but just cannot understand the policy of the quarter to use the carts, I never have cash with me so becomes a problem when shopping there however seems your tips are good. Coudl consider going back =)
