The Best Things To Do Before Bed

I am someone who NEEDS sleep. I do not do well on little to no sleep. When I got pregnant I was never scared about childbirth or any of the gross baby things like diapers. Nope I was worried about sleep.  I have some tips on what I think the best things to do before bed are so I am going to share them for anyone else who relies heavily on great sleep.

The Best Things To Do Before Bed

Meditate: I mention about meditating in as many posts as I can because I truly believe everyone should be doing it. I was so skeptical but goodness it really makes a difference. I used to only meditate in the morning but I have added in night meditations and I feel like I sleep so much better with a clear mind.

Read:  I am a big fan of reading before bed. It relaxes me and it’s so much better for you than watching TV. Although I do love a good movie at night.

Take a bath/shower: I am not a bath person but I do love taking showers before bed when I can. If I do take a shower I use this shower gel at night and I swear it helps. I also use the sleep spray on my pillow and blanket.

Do a face mask: I love face masks for ALL times of the day, but if I do one at night I use this one. I swear it’s not sponsored by this brand I just really love these products!

Journal: It doesn’t need to be a journal you write in, you could even do it on an app on your phone but it’s a great way to get thoughts out and clear your head.

Drink tea: I LOVE LOVE LOVE chamomile tea after dinner. When I was pregnant I drank warm milk (I am not even a milk drinker). But having something warm and comforting just helps you sleep better.

Turn off screens: This is what I am the WORST about, but turning off screens will help you sleep better. I do read on my iPad but I turn the light very very low.

I personally think these are the best things to do before bed but do you have anything to add?

  1. I do not do well on little sleep too, but I keep sleeping at 4am! And it’s not like I can sleep in, with a 9-6 job! I’m trying to stick to my bedtime reading routine right now…

Hi Neely, this was an awesome blog post. Thank so much for sharing your tips on before going to bed! I too need sleep and cannot function properly without having enough rest. I get headaches and sometimes I can be grumpy or even start to cry because my head hurts so much. Lol I agree with your post. I never did a face mask before let alone before bed either! I must try it. I love reading in bed and taking showers every night before bed. I take one during the morning to start my day and another one to end my night! Very refreshing!!! I also like to crochet or sew on projects that I’m currently working on or might have. Studying my Word and praying is a must and spending time with my children before I put them to sleep. We almost have the same bedtime. 🤣 I need to start journaling that would be wonderful. And yes I am a tea drinker and I just picked up some chamomile and peppermint today. Again, thank you so much. Have a wonderful and beautiful day. By the way: just finished reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert… 3 🌟’s read for me, but I definitely recommend if you haven’t already read it. ✌🏽

  6. I have a terrible sleep pattern. I suffer from FOMO, so like I young child, I fight off sleep. But then the next day, I can’t seem to pull myself from under the covers! My routine changes from night to night…Most of the time, I read in bed, but that has a tendency to keep me awake if a book is particularly captivating. I’ve tried meditating too and listening to ambient sounds (via apps on my phone). However, what I have found most effective are ASMR videos. They’re not for everyone, but they do work for me and can really get me to relax. 😀

  7. Reading does the trick for me. I will often fall asleep in a matter of minutes- sometimes with the book laying across my chest- once I start reading

I do some of these things especially reading. One thing I always do before I go into the bedroom is to do 15 minutes or so of cleaning. I sleep better when my house is clean and the best time to clean is when everyone else in the family is in their rooms.

Tea before bed is an issue for me. The caffeine prevents me from sleeping well (if at all). Warm milk is a better solution.

Among the things you’ve listed, the one that I do almost every night is read. It has been a habit I had since I was a child. The other important thing I do before going to bed is pray.

  15. I’ve read somewhere that a person can really get sick if she/he doesn’t have a good amount of sleep. That’s why getting a good night sleep is really important to me. I’ll be giving birth in a few weeks and I know sleep would be an issue. I’m excited and scared at the same time. Any tips for new moms on getting enough sleep?

  16. Turning off screens is so important. I think that is probably the one thing that keeps me up late, checking my phone.
