How To Never Run Out Of Blog Post Ideas

Blog post ideas. Sometimes we sit down, we open WordPress (or whatever platform you use) and we want to write a post. But we draw a blank. What did I do this weekend? No that’s not interesting. Wait, what are my favorite lip glosses? No I wrote about that! What should I write about? There are ways to never run out of blog post ideas and I am going to tell you!

How-To-Never-Run-Out-Of-Blog-Post-Ideas

Keep a Running List: I have a running list in my phone of ideas. Sometimes it may be a word or a phrase. Sometimes it’s a complete title or idea. These come to me at random times. I may be on the couch watching TV, working, running errands, or heck even on a plane. I go to this list and write it down immediately! Keeping a list on your phone is a great way to always have ideas.

Go to Pinterest: Pinterest is a great place for inspiration! I love scrolling through Pinterest when I’m bored or when I need inspiration. Be it for my blog or general life inspiration. You never know what kind of picture can trigger an idea. Remember though, be VERY careful about giving credit. Both for ideas and photos.

Get Inspiration From Others But DON’T Copy: Other bloggers posts are a great place to get inspiration. We all do it. You read a post a blogger posted and think “wow that’s a great idea” then put your own unique spin on it. The key is putting your own spin on it and NOT COPYING.

Think About What You Like To Read: What kinds of posts do you gravitate towards? Fitness advice? Beauty tips? Fashion posts? Whatever you love reading is probably a hint that you should be writing about those things too! Now granted I LOVE reading fashion posts, but I am no fashion blogger and will never be a fashion blogger. So there are exceptions to the rule.

Think of Your Focus: I wrote this post about if your blog needs a focus. My main reasoning is that no you don’t need ONE focus, but having a few topics that are your GO TO topics are a good idea. So think about your focus. If recipes, family stories, and crafts are the things you blog about most when you run out of ideas, think about those things and think about something you’ve wanted to blog about in that area. What’s a recipe you made recently that people would love? What’s a great book you read that someone should know about?

There is an endless amount of blog topics out there. You can also go to really old posts you’ve written and write something similar. Write a part two or three or seven. Write a personal story about your childhood. There is a way to never run out of blog post ideas, and following the above steps will really help you.

This is such a great post! I keep a running list on my phone, so I can easily add to it whenever something pops up in my head (often in the middle of the night). I always try to think of what are posts I would like to read or what are posts I feel passionately about. I love that you say to take inspiration from others without copying. Certainly no blogger has claim to makeup posts or writing about their Instagram success, but like you said, just put your own spin on it.

These are excellent tips! If I hit a dry spell, I participate in weekly link-ups or do an old school blog survey and that usually gets the juices flowing again.

  8. I am huge with getting inspiration with others. If I like a style of a post, I often ask the blogger if it’s okay to use that same style.

These are great ideas. When I’m having a little trouble thining of something I turn to the memo on my phone. I keep a list of post ideas, I jot them down whenever I think of something. I check out Pinterest for inspiration at times too though.

  12. YES YES YES, running list!! I sit down to schedule out my week ahead of time and can go to that running list to make it easy, especially when other ideas aren’t inspiring me. Also, I think about what *I* need or want to hear or know more about. It may make the post take a bit longer to write with the research needed but it helps ME while also then helping my readers!

  19. I definitely keep a running list of blog ideas! I’m like you and they come to me at totally random times and if I don’t write them down I’ll just forget them. Once you have a running list going it will exceed what you need to have and you’ll always have a few back up options 🙂 thanks for sharing!

Really good ideas! I’ve realized that it’s impossible for me to permanently run out of blog post ideas–my usual strategy is if I can’t think of anything to write, I just don’t write and go do something else. Odds are I’ll have plenty to write about next time.

Love this post! I like to keep a giant list going. Whenever I come up with a new idea, I add it to my list or create a rough draft in my WordPress dashboard. I also get a ton of inspiration from others. Like you said, it’s important to put your own spin on topics rather than directly copying another blogger’s thoughts. Great list!

I also take notes in my phone! The best way I’ve found to come up with new content is just to drive or walk around downtown and get inspired–by places, by people, by events. I also tend to come up with a lot of ideas when I’m trying to fall asleep (kind of annoying, but also good). I highly suggest keeping a notebook by your bedside – we are our most creative in the time right before falling asleep!
