Monthly Wellness Series Month Ten: Food

I would like to preface this by reminding you that I do not have a background in nutrition and that this isn not advice on the best meals to eat etc. This is JUST my experience with food! I have covered a lot of topics in my monthly wellness series this year but I haven’t really tackled food because I feel like it’s very personal.

Monthly Wellness Series Month Ten: Food

Why I think it’s Important:

Food is fuel and food should be enjoyed. I think our relationship with food is one that many people (myself included) are always working on. I have not always had the best relationship with food and frankly I still don’t at times. I think it’s important to show our kids that food is fuel and food is fun and enjoyable but also show them that what we put in our body is important. It’s fun to eat cookies and candy sure but that is no going to sustain us or give us energy. I try to eat foods that sustain and give me energy because I am a very active person.

What I do:

I should preface this by what I wish I did. What I would love to do is not track, not worry about what I eat, and enjoy food. Sometimes I do this and I am great at it and other times it’s very hard for me and I look at food as punishment or a reward instead of just eating foods I enjoy. I do try to live by the 80/20 rule. 80% of the time I eat clean, whole, healthy foods, and 20% of the time I splurge on things like cookies (my favorite), wine, or an indulgent dinner. For the most part I am the 80%. My breakfast is always oatmeal and a banana because I truly love it! For lunch I usually have a salad I make in the best salad chopper ever or I have chicken breast, veggies, and some fruit. For dinner 6/7 nights I eat something with chicken because I don’t eat red meat and I do not enjoy fish. Friday night we ALWAYS have homemade pizza. For snacks I try to do whole healthy foods: fruits and veggies, nuts, whole grain crackers, etc. But I do love goldfish and could eat them all day everyday.

This months challenge:

JUST ENJOY YOUR FOOD! Don’t look at it as a reward for this or a punishment for that. That is what I am trying to do just enjoy food and make sure you are fueling your body!

I try to follow the 80/20 rule as well. It’s important to eat well, but doesn’t hurt to indulge now and then. I’ve had to really change how I eat since finding out I’m allergic to dairy and eggs this year.

“Food is Fuel!” I love how you’ve included that. I’ve also been told that food is a medicine that helped me overcome a long term eating disorder in the beginning months of recovery.

  5. I am completely on the same page as you. The 80/20 approach is definitely sensible as while we need to fuel ourselves with nutritious food it’s important to also leave room for enjoyment too.

Savouring and truly enjoying the food you eat is such a wonderful act of self-care. Overall wellness is simpler to practice than people think.

I love the idea of the 80/20 rule! I feel like when I eat super-healthy I try to do it 100% and I feel deprived. Giving myself that 20% would help me stick with healthy foods! Thanks for the great idea 🙂

  15. Oh i love this challenge and i like how you give yourself freedom on what you can eat. While i know this might not sound healthy haha but sometimes overly tracking your food can stress you out.. Also you can always enjoy food while trying to be healthy at the same time…. Although in my case.. My sweet tooth will probably tempt me to eat more sweets haha.. Thank you for sharing this challenge to us.. Wow.. You havr 3 months more to complete this year.. Cheers!

This is a great focus for the month! I try to practice intuitive eating. I’m usually eating clean, mostly plant-based meals (though I’m not vegan, I just noticed I feel better when 80% of my diet or more is plant-based), but if I randomly get a craving for something, I figure it’s my body telling me there’s something in that food that it needs so I let myself indulge.
